How to get better at chess for free: a 4-week routine
A simple 4-week plan to improve at chess using only free tools: coached games, game reviews, focused bot practice and games with friends.
You don't need a paid plan to improve. You need a routine: play, review, fix one thing, repeat. Here's a four-week plan using free ChessMess tools — about 30 minutes a day.
Week 1 — Stop giving pieces away
- Play 2 games a day in Coach mode against a bot about your level.
- Before every move, ask: is anything of mine attacked? Is anything of theirs free?
- Review each game and count your blunders. Aim to halve them by week's end.
Week 2 — Learn to see tactics
- Keep Coach mode on and turn on threat arrows.
- Watch for forks, pins and skewers in the coach's explanations.
- In each review, replay every "Missed win" until you'd find it yourself.
Week 3 — Play without help
- Turn coaching off and play bots 100–200 points above you.
- Use longer time controls (10–15 minutes) so you can think.
- Review after each game; write down one lesson per game.
Week 4 — Test it against people
- Invite friends or play online at rapid time controls.
- Keep reviewing every game. Notice which lessons from weeks 1–3 now come naturally.
Habits that matter most
- Review every game, especially losses. It's free and unlimited.
- Play slower while learning. Speed comes later.
- One fix at a time. Trying to improve everything at once improves nothing.
