A free chess website with no paywall: exactly what's free on ChessMess

ChessMess is free with no paywall, trial or sign-up: 19 bots, a coach, unlimited game reviews, 100,000 puzzles and 57 lessons. Every limit and ad is listed here.

ChessMess is a free chess website with no paywall, no trial and no sign-up. For free you get 19 bots rated 250 to 3200 plus an adaptive one, a coach that explains your moves, unlimited Game Review with Stockfish 19, an analysis board, 100,000 rated puzzles in 73 themes and 57 interactive lessons. No tool is held back for paying members. Some menu and reading pages can show small ads, never during games, and a few extras unlock by watching one short video.

"Free" and "unlimited" get stretched a lot, so here's the whole list, including the limits.

What's free, and the limit on each

Do I need an account?

No. Guests can play every mode, and this browser keeps your last 300 games and your settings. A free account saves everything across devices and gives you an @handle for friends and challenges.

What "unlimited" means here

It means nobody counts your reviews or analysis, and there's no daily allowance to run out of. ChessMess runs Stockfish 19 inside your browser, so a review uses your device instead of our servers and costs us nothing per game.

That has two practical effects. Speed depends on your device: a typical game takes a few seconds on a laptop and longer on an older phone. And the hourly limits in the table are on features that use our servers, such as looking up players and creating rooms, where they stop abuse. Normal use shouldn't reach them.

Where the ads are, and what paying gets you

Small banners can appear on some menu and reading pages. They never appear on the game screen, in friend games or in the mistake trainer. Short videos only play when you choose to unlock something. The details are in how ChessMess is funded.

Supporters pay $3 for a month or $24 for a year, as one-time payments that never renew. They get no ads or videos, a crown badge and the Gilded theme. They don't get a stronger coach, more reviews or any other extra tool. Tips and early changes of a display name or handle are the only other things you can pay for.

What ChessMess doesn't have yet

Tournaments, clubs and variants aren't here yet, and neither are live games against strangers: online games are against AI opponents matched to your rating while the community grows. Friend games are against the real person you invite.

If you want those now, Lichess is the obvious choice, and it's free too. Its features page, checked on 7 November 2026, lists no ads, unlimited tournaments and 8 variants, with deep server analysis capped at 40 games a day and an analysis board in the browser. Chess.com has the biggest community, and its help centre (21 July 2026) lists 1 full game review, 3 puzzles and 1 lesson a day on the free plan. Questions and answers

Is ChessMess really free?
Yes. Every tool for playing and learning is free, with no paywall and no trial. Some menu and reading pages can show small ads, never during games, and Coach, takebacks and premium boards unlock with a short video.
Is there a catch to the unlimited game reviews?
No limit applies, because Stockfish 19 runs in your browser and each review uses your device instead of our servers. The only practical effect is speed: long games on older phones take longer.
Can I use ChessMess without an account?
Yes. Guests can play every mode, and the browser keeps their last 300 games and their settings. A free account saves everything across devices and adds an @handle for friends and challenges.
Does ChessMess have ads?
Some menu and reading pages can show small banners, and short videos play only when you choose to unlock something. There are no ads on the game screen, in friend games or in the mistake trainer, and supporters see none at all.
Are ChessMess online opponents real people?
Online games are against AI opponents matched to your rating while the community grows. Friend games are against the real person you invite.
